The term comes from Ancient Greece and originally described a form of government. Literally, it means “the rule of the best.”
When a person possessed a certain set of virtues — military valor, a higher intellectual development, moral or spiritual superiority — and truly proved to be the best within a community, city, or state, that person was chosen as an aristocrat, a member of the ruling elite.
Only later did aristocracy begin to pass from generation to generation. Children were educated in sciences, justice, wisdom, and refined conduct.
Ordinary people always longed to glimpse this elegant life — to touch refined things with the tips of their fingers, or at least to hear how that special world sounded and felt.
